The war came and went. I did not manage to paint the war. The war was much stronger than I was by myself and it turned all of us into isolated beings, special in a way. A refrigerator can function in places at war, if there is electricity, as well as in places at peace; provided that it can be plugged in somewhere, it can work in underdeveloped regions just as well as in highly developed ones. Owning a refrigerator gives us the feeling that we have the same possibilities as others living in "better and happier" circumstances. Still, I have not painted a refrigerator yet, it did not really interest me. But I believe that the portraits of couples created in 1995 and 1996 are the most powerful paintings I have made so far.

The works presented here were first exhibited under the title "Portraits" at the Gallery Arteria, Zagreb, in 1996.
